Priceless Christian Behaviors: Instruction and Warning from Paul

Priceless Christian Behaviors
Instruction and Warning from Paul
1 Corinthians 4:6-21
Getting Started:
1. As we reflect on the scriptures, and the teaching from this week’s sermon, is
there an obvious area that I can share with my group where I need to surrender
my thinking to the teaching of the Word of God? What areas do I need to
surrender in order that I can be conformed to God’s way of thinking?
2. The one thing that really stood out to me from this week’s message was _____?
3. How would you summarize the main ideas of this week’s sermon in two or three
sentences? How would you capture the heart of the message in your own
words?
4. Was there anything that you heartily agreed or disagreed with in this week’s
sermon...and why?
Exploring the Text:
1. A huge theme this week was the challenge to the Corinthians to think Biblically.
Let’s take some time to explore some related Biblical texts and to discuss this
further. What conclusions can we make about the Bible from reading these
texts? (Group Leader: Consider assigning these passages to your group and
taking turns reading each one.)
2 Timothy 3:15-17
Mark 13:31
1 Peter 2:2-3
2 Peter 1:16-21
John 1:1-14
Hebrews 4:12
Isaiah 55:10-11
2 Timothy 1:13-14
2. How do the verses that we looked at in question 1 inform our view of the Bible?

3. Based on what we learned this week, how can we conform our thinking about
ministry leaders to the pattern of the scriptures. Hint: Paul has already given us
many of these in 1 Corinthians 1-4.
4. Another key theme this week was Christian modesty. Paul instructed the
Corinthian Believers to have a modest view of themselves, even if they had been
saved or discipled by a prominent Apostle of Christian Minister. Let’s look at a
few more Bible passages to see how we can add to this discussion. Group
Leader: Consider assigning these passages to your group and taking turns
reading each one.)
Matthew 20:20-28
Galatians 2:20
Philippians 2:1-11
1 Peter 5:5-7
5. How do the verses that we looked at in question 3 apply to our vital
relationships...like with our spouses, our children, parents, close friends, or even
our bosses? How should these verses impact the ways that we interact with one
another as members of Christ’s Church at Calvary Chapel?
6. How is Church sometimes like a middle school? Based on Paul’s teaching, what
would you say is the primary reason that some churches feel like a middle
school? Can we make a commitment to others in our fellowship to progress
towards maturity in our walk with Christ, and to camaraderie with other believers?
7. There was quite a contrast between Paul’s Christian experience and sufferings,
and the luxurious Christian life of the Corinthians. Paul used sarcasm to help
them see the differences. Has there been a time in your life when you had to
practice, or receive, tough love that was intended to challenge you to repentance
and right thinking?
8. Paul instructed the Corinthians to imitate him, and to submit to his teaching. He
even sent Timothy, Paul’s son in the faith, to help remind them of the things that
Paul had instructed them before. Who stands out in your life as a role model that
you can follow? Has God placed people in your life that are good and Godly
examples to imitate? If you are comfortable sharing about them, please tell us
who they are and why they are a role model for you?
9. How does thinking about the soon and certain return of Christ, and the reality that
even believers will face a judgment of our works, compel you to be sober minded

in your walk with God? How does the Lord’s soon return inspire you to prepare
to meet Him as a part of your daily Christian walk?
Digging Deeper:
1. Biblical thinking is so important to the Christian life. If I were to do a spiritual
heart check right now, what priority have I placed on studying the Word of God in
my personal life? Is this an area where God might lead me to improve? Given
that accountability is so powerful in our lives, what commitments would God lead
you to make to your group about this?
2. Humility is also important to our walk with the Lord. Is there an area of self-pride
in my life, or perhaps pride in a custom, tradition, experience, sect, or person that
needs to be laid down before Jesus? Is there any area where perhaps I have
become a little “puffed up?”
3. Now that we have discussed the message deeper, what is the one thing this
week that the Lord would say to you the loudest? What one thing stands out as
something that God would have you to meditate on this week?
4. If you were leading the group, what would you say is the most important thing
that we should grasp before the leave tonight?
